Dear Parents and Community Members,
I am writing to let you know that due to a break in the water main at Sultan Elementary School, school will be canceled for Sultan Elementary students tomorrow. This closure only applies to Sultan Elementary School. The Sultan High School campus, Sultan Middle School campus, and Gold Bar Elementary campus will be open and operating on a half-day schedule, June 21st, the last day of school this year. Due to the timing of this emergency, and the impact of closing for the last day of school we are applying for an emergency waiver, making today, June 20th, the last day for Sultan Elementary school students. We do not intend to bring Sultan Elementary kids back on Wednesday, June 22nd.
At 8:30 am this morning, we were advised to turn the water off as the leak we were experiencing was diagnosed as a break in the main water line. We called a plumber and unfortunately, after the situation was inspected, the problem is one that will take more specialization to fix, therefore making the decision to close tomorrow, a necessity. When situations like this occur, several factors are considered that include but are not limited to student safety, our ability to send kids home to supervision, and the impact on the learning environment.
Students were able to use the restrooms in the district office as necessary. While we were able to work around this challenge for a day, it is not sustainable and we need to be sure that students can use the restroom and wash their hands as needed. I appreciate the understanding and flexibility of everyone as these situations can be very challenging. If you still have things left at school after today, you will be able to pick them up by calling the elementary office and arranging a pick up time.
Sincerely,
Dan Chaplik, Superintendent
Sultan School District
