Letter to Parents and Guardians:

10/9/2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Many of us recently learned of criminal allegations and an arrest involving a school parent who was also associated with parent teacher organization, Watch Dogs, and various other community programs outside of the school community.

The District has limited information at this time, other than we have recently also been made aware of some of the charging documents that are beginning to surface in media reports. We are in direct communication with the lead detective to learn more about the circumstances surrounding this situation.

To the extent we become aware of the nature of the concerns surrounding this individual, we may be limited in our ability to share that information in order to respect the confidentially of the individuals involved.

What we can share is that the individual that is under arrest is not permitted on any of our campuses and has been trespassed indefinitely. We will continue to work with the Detective and Snohomish County Sheriff's Office to assist in the investigation in any way possible.

In the meantime, we remain focused on the health and well-being of our students and school community. If any concerns arise while talking to your child or if you become aware of anything involving this individual and any of our students, please reach out to our School Resource Office, Deputy Craig Hess or myself. We will support you in the best way possible; if your child would like to talk to an adult about any concerns around this situation, please contact your school principal or school counselor. We also have our K-8 Mental Health Specialist and Student Support Advocate available. You can also contact the district office and we will put you in contact with the appropriate person at each school.

Sincerely,

Dan Chaplik

Here are some ways parents can help during this difficult time:

Adult Information:

See something/say something;
Trust your children to act as children; give them the space to self report and check that their answers line up with facts;
Replace ‘Stranger Danger’ with ‘Tricky People’;
Teach them what is appropriate behavior and what to do when they experience something that is not; keep age appropriate relationships;
Call 911 if in doubt or unsure of validity, this also relieves anxiety and rumors;

Parent to Student Communication:

Speak to your student about appropriate contacts by adults, physical contacts should be brief and dependent on relationship;
Internet contact should be practically non existent between kids and adults to maintain appropriate boundaries;
Check student phones and electronics often, pins and passwords should be family accessible;
Set expectations and consequences.

We would ask that our community refrain from speculation regarding this incident out of respect for all of our students. If you think that you may know something that may be important for law enforcement then please contact our School Resource Officer, Deputy Hess (craig.hess@sultan.k12.wa.us), your student’s school to speak with an administrator, or the Sultan School District Office at (360)793-9800.
